A Ghost Story (2017) movie poster written and directed by David Lowery |
As a stay precaution: stay patient with this movie and you'll walk out feeling like you've got a new sense of purpose in life.
If you are watching this thinking it's a horror movie, then it is not. Don't worry! A Ghost Story is a movie about a man, played by Casey Affleck, who becomes a ghost and remains in the house he shares with his wife, played by Rooney Mara. The movie is written and directed by David Lowery. It is such a meditative and wholly original movie.
A Ghost Story is a movie about loss, loneliness, and love. The thing is that we usually perceive love as joy and happiness and the worst of it as heartbreak. But, it is so much more abstract than that. The director through this movie is showing us the other dimension of love that we usually miss. Usually when we break up with our loved one for big or small or maybe even tiny arguments, we still have something to tell ourselves in the process of moving on by remembering the highest negative of that arguments and that gives us power to move on. It also helps us greatly to see our partner falling out of love with us, because we know they have same logic as ours.
But what if someday you just die and leave them no reason to hate you or hate you? usually the story is over for you because you're not there to see what is ahead. And generally you had want them to move on after you leave because you're not there. But, this guy's soul stuck in a cosmic space and he comes back to his house. Only to invisibly and intangibly watch her wife slowly and genuinely falling out of love with him. And as he gave her no reason to move, he is just helplessly watching with probably amazement or neutrality or whatever, that's how the wife moving on when there is no reason. I know there is a reason and it is that he is dead, but there is no reason for her to forget all the love he left for her.
From the movie, we cannot guess what he feels because the director wants us to see the exact way in which his soul is helpless. White sheet or blanket or whatever you name it, in the movie represents the helplessness, I think. The director could have shown us his expression or his feelings, but he wants us to feel the exact nothingness and helplessness this soul goes through. The two holes in the place of eyes represents how he can 'Only Spectate'. Besides, he is in such a space where he can only spectate his most precious thing being stolen.
For me this movie would be the deepest mental torture from a different perspective and one of the deepest concepts about love that I've ever come across. You'll either get it or you won't. Because much of the scenes in this movie have no dialogue and the visual plays on emotions. Let's just say there was such a thing as an "emotional first air kit", this movie would be the first in a pack and it would be the one and only thing you need to survive.
If you ever wondered what it felt like as a spirit to be attached to the physical world while being pulled into the eternal world, then this is your movie.
